Neil Gaiman once wrote, “Cities are not people. But, like people, cities have their own personalities: in some cases one city has many different personalities — there are a dozen Londons, a crowd of different New Yorks.” This was his introduction to a piece written for Sim City 2000 (don’t recognize it? Query a library and hit “Ruminate”). But it turns out cities might be a lot more like people–and other living creatures–than he ever realized. Apparently they even follow some of the same fundamental laws of nature.

This may be one of the coolest things I’ve ever read in my life. If you don’t have time, on of the key takeaways is this: as organisms get larger and larger, each individual cell slows down its rate of energy consumption. As cities get larger and larger, fewer gas stations are required on a per-person basis to serve the fuel energy needs of the populace. The same equation describes both.

Hopefully there will be more awesome city math to follow. I’m currently trying to figure out what is a better predictor of a city’s walkability: total population or population density? Theoretically it seems like the denser cities would obviously be more walkable, but looking at a list of the 40 most populous cities in America, it seems like size might be an even better indicator, since the most walkable ones are clustered near the top (and while size and density are correlated, it’s not perfect).
